Ames City Council to Increase Penalties During WEB 801 Day

New Draft Ordinances to Address Public Safety Concerns

Ames, Iowa - August 15, 2023

The Ames City Council is set to introduce new draft ordinances at its meeting on August 16th that will significantly increase penalties for violations occurring during WEB 801 Day, an annual event known for its excessive alcohol consumption and partying.

WEB 801 Day, which falls on the Saturday before the start of each new school year, has historically been marked by public safety concerns, including underage drinking, property damage, and disorderly conduct. In recent years, the event has grown in popularity, leading to increased concerns among residents and law enforcement. The proposed ordinance amendments aim to address these issues and improve public safety during the event.

The proposed ordinances would increase fines for a range of offenses, including underage possession of alcohol, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and property damage. The ordinances would also allow for the impoundment of vehicles for repeat offenders. Additionally, the ordinances would extend the hours during which increased penalties would be in effect, from 10 pm to 4 am.

The City Council's decision to consider increasing penalties for WEB 801 Day violations comes after numerous complaints from residents and businesses about the event's negative impacts. The proposed ordinances are intended to deter unsafe and disruptive behavior, enhance public safety, and protect the community's quality of life.
